Building a personal website

Creating a place to publish my projects and ramblings

Home

The minimum viable product

I've made decent progress over the past fortnight and the bones of the project are now in place. My goal was that a user could go to the site and view a project and an update, and this is now working nicely.

Completed work

  • I have a static site and a functions app hosted on Azure, which are continuously deployed from their respective Git repositories using GitHub actions.
  • After some experimentation I decided to move from a SQL database to Azure table storage, which is a simple document database. This worked out much cheaper and is more than powerful enough for my purposes.
  • All the DNS records are configured, so now you can get to the site from alfiewood.land if you wish!

Below is the remaining work. I've removed any complete items and have added a few more I thought of along the way.

Remaining must haves

  • It should be a showcase of my professional and personal projects.
  • It should provide my CV and contact information.

Remaining should haves

  • It should be easy and fun to use. Currently the site is lacking a back button and only the grid layout is functional. I wouldn't call it fun or easy to use yet!
  • Azure Blob Storage for media.

Remaining could haves

  • A physics toggle inspired by Google Gravity.
  • Sort, filter and search functionality.
  • A very simple local CMS built using React for creating, updating and deleting content.

That's all for now. My next update will be once I have the site layout and navigation pretty much complete, and images loading from Azure blob storage.
